How to Properly Store Your Tires Between Seasons (Practical Guide)

Do you dread the moment of changing your tires because you’re not a fan of your storage technique? Don’t worry, we’ve got the best tips to help you keep your tires in great shape despite Quebec’s drastic temperature changes!

Step 1 – Clean Your Tires Before Storing Them

First, it’s essential to clean your tires with soap and water to remove any salt, sand, and dust residue. Don’t forget to dry them thoroughly to prevent mold or corrosion on the rims.

Step 2 – Check the Condition and Pressure of Your Tires

Inspect all your tires for cracks, uneven wear, or damage. Then, check the air pressure and take note of each tire’s condition to avoid any unpleasant surprises next season.

Step 3 – Store Your Tires the Right Way: Vertical or Horizontal?

Vertical or horizontal storage:

  • Without rims: Store your tires vertically (standing up) and rotate them every 4 to 6 weeks to prevent deformation.
  • With rims: Store your tires horizontally (stacked), no more than 4 per pile, and change their position each month if possible.

Location:

  • A dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
  • Ideal temperature: between 10 °C and 25 °C, avoiding extreme fluctuations.
  • Avoid damp areas or spots near chemicals, solvents, fuel, or electrical equipment (ozone can damage the rubber).

Protection:

  • Cover them with a breathable tire bag or perforated plastic cover to protect against dust and UV rays.
  • Don’t seal airtight if the tire has no rim, this could cause mold growth.

Step 4 – Get Your Tires Ready for the Next Season

  • Tires with rims: Inflate them slightly to help maintain their shape.
  • Tires without rims: Do not inflate, but make sure they are not compressed.

Step 5 – How Long Do Properly Stored Tires Last?

Even when properly stored, tires have a limited lifespan, generally up to 6 years from the date of manufacture, even if unused.

**Quebec Tip: If you store your tires in a garage that can freeze during winter, use tire covers and store them vertically to prevent deformation caused by the cold.
